Piper with a Pearl Earring

For this week’s post, I decided to publish a picture of my mixed breed dog Piper. She is a “Labrador Retriever mix” as the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed of dog in the United States therefore most shelters label their dogs this way to promote adoption and decrease the number of dogs in shelters. My perspective on social media has not been the most positive or understood the various production of meanings from photos or videos posted of food, pets, and picturesque landscapes, I think social media should have large effects in society or contribute to an overall positive change in the world. But as Professor Cream reminded me you can’t make a large change in society without a small one. So, I posted a picture of my dog and maybe that made one person’s day better or brought a moment of silliness in an otherwise serious day. I also used #dogs and #dogsofinstagram so that Piper could join the prestigious organizations as many furry friends have joined before her. Also, I posted Piper’s photo in relation to Johannes Vermeer’s oil painting titled Girl with a Pearl Earring because Piper with the towel over her head emulated women in medieval paintings and the most striking painting I could think of was from Vermeer. I think Piper is a spitting image and it made me smile. Maybe fun is the goal I should set with social media and leave the commentary and meta commentary for the future.

Create some fun 🙂
